Brunch in Los Angeles can be a whole thing. Reservations weeks out, hour-long waits, $28 eggs that are fine but not memorable. We've always wanted to be the alternative to that β a place where you can walk in on a Saturday morning, get something genuinely excellent, and leave feeling like you actually had a good time.
Nearly eight years in, we think we've figured it out. Here's why people keep coming back to Penny Oven for brunch in Eagle Rock.
The Food Is Made Here
This is the thing we're most proud of. The bread was baked this morning. The croissants were laminated by hand. The hollandaise on your Benny was made from scratch. The pastries in the case didn't come off a truck. When you eat at Penny Oven, you're eating food that someone made in the kitchen behind you, starting before sunrise.
That difference is real and you can taste it.
The Menu Has Range
We have the classics β eggs any style, bacon, toast, pancakes β but we also have dishes that you won't find anywhere else in the neighborhood. The Shakshuka is spiced and deep and comes with house toast for dragging through the sauce. The Steak Benny puts flank steak on a house-made English muffin with hollandaise and orange harissa marmalade. The Tuna Toast is a cult item. The Dutch Baby is a conversation starter.
There's something for everyone, including a solid kids' menu and a play area for families who need it.
The Coffee Is Serious
We use Groundworks, an LA roaster, for our espresso program. Lattes, cappuccinos, flat whites β all properly made. We also have a range of superfood lattes (mushroom, matcha, golden milk, moringa) for people who want something different. The Hemp Cacao Iced Coffee has its own following.
