The Dutch Baby Is the Most Romantic Thing on Our Menu

← Back to News

We didn't set out to make a romantic dish. We set out to make a great dish. But the Dutch Baby has become the thing people order on special mornings — birthdays, anniversaries, and yes, Valentine's Day. It arrives at the table puffed and dramatic, golden and fragrant, and it has a way of making whatever conversation you're having feel more significant.

That's what good food does. It creates a context. It slows things down.

What Is a Dutch Baby?

A Dutch Baby is an oven-baked pancake — batter poured into a hot cast iron pan, baked at high heat until it puffs up dramatically around the edges, then served immediately. It falls slightly as it cools, which is why you eat it right away. Ours is finished with lemon curd and whipped crème fraîche — tart and creamy in a way that plain maple syrup never is.

It's not a small dish. It's meant for lingering over, possibly splitting, definitely worth savoring.

Come In on Valentine's Day

We're open 7am–3pm on Valentine's Day, same as every day. We don't do special reservations or fixed menus — we're a neighborhood bakery, not a fine dining restaurant. But that's also kind of the point. Breakfast at Penny Oven on Valentine's morning feels intentional in a way that's different from a fancy dinner. It says: I wanted to start this day well, with you, over something really good.

The Dutch Baby will be on the menu. So will the Steak Benny, the Shakshuka, and every pastry we baked that morning. We'll have fresh flowers on the tables. Come as you are.

We're at 2131 Colorado Blvd in Eagle Rock. Order online for pickup or come sit with us.
