We opened Penny Oven in 2018 because we believed Eagle Rock deserved a proper artisan bakery and breakfast spot. Something that took bread seriously, that made everything in-house, that felt like a neighborhood place rather than a trend. Almost eight years later, we're still at it β and we still think breakfast in Eagle Rock is among the best you'll find in all of LA.
Here's what we'd tell a friend who just moved to the neighborhood and wants to know where to eat in the morning.
Start with the Bread
Everything at Penny Oven begins with our sourdough, baked from scratch every morning before we open. The toast you get with your eggs or your benny was baked that day. The croissants in the pastry case were laminated by hand. We don't use par-baked or frozen pastry. If that sounds obvious, it isn't β most places do.
What to Order on Your First Visit
If it's your first time, here's the short list: the Shakshuka is a non-negotiable. Chickpeas, tomato, bell pepper, green harissa, served with house toast. It's been on our menu since we opened and it has its own fan club. The Steak Benny is what we're known for β poached eggs, grilled flank steak, arugula, and hollandaise on a house-made English muffin. The Dutch Baby is the wild card: an oven-baked lemon curd pancake that looks dramatic and tastes even better than it looks.
For coffee, we use Groundworks β an LA roaster we've worked with for years. Ask for the Hemp Cacao Iced Coffee if you want something different.
Come Early, Especially on Weekends
We're open 7amβ3pm every day at 2131 Colorado Blvd. Weekends get busy fast, especially from 9amβ12pm. We don't take reservations, but the wait is almost always worth it. Bring a book, come with a friend, settle in.
We also have a kids' play area, which makes us one of the more genuinely family-friendly spots on the boulevard. Come as you are.
